About Project Swell![]() OverviewProject SWELL was started in San Diego, CA and is a school science-based curricula that teaches children about the importance of our recreational waterways and human-water interaction from both environmental-conservation and environmental-science standpoints. This unique hands-on education effort incorporates pollution prevention practices so that children learn ways in which they can be the solution not the problem to local environmental issues, teaching children to make the connection first hand. Through these lessons, students learn how they can minimize impacts to this sensitive coastal environment and address environmental issues pertaining to our region. Since the program was implemented in 2004 we have reached more than 160,000 with Project SWELL lessons.HistoryThis innovative approach to learning began with the inaugural rollout of the 5th grade lesson in 2004, reaching more than 10,000 5th graders in San Diego Unified School District. Since then, we have developed and implemented lessons for Kindergarten, 2nd, 4th and 6th grades in San Diego Unified School District, reaching 50,000 students annually. Ultimately, we plan to develop and implement the SWELL curricula in all K-12 classrooms in San Diego Unified School District and expand the program into other school districts county-wide to reach more than 100,000 students annually.
