Q: Is it possible to implement Project SWELL in my school district?

A: Yes, you would need to contact San Diego Coastkeeper to discuss tailoring the curriculum.

Q: How is Project SWELL different from other programs in my school district?

A: SWELL is a unique curriculum because:

1. it is San Diego specific and addresses environmental issues pertaining to our watersheds and region
2. it incorporates pollution prevention practices so that children learn ways in which they can be the solution not the problem to environmental issues
3. it is a hands-on program that teaches children to make the connection first hand and minimize impacts to this sensitive coastal environment

Q: CAN I USE SWELL IF WE DON'T USE FOSS KITS?

A: Yes. We can tailor the lessons to be an extension of the existing science curriculum. The lessons align with the State Science Content Standards for California Public Schools, Science Framework for California and meet the learning objectives set out by the California Department of Education. We have developed hands-on SWELL kits to teach the inquiry-based SWELL lessons in all classrooms.

Originally, the SWELL lessons were designed to be an extension of the existing science curriculum used with inquiry-based FOSS (Full Option Science System) hands-on science kits In SDUSD and OUSD. The SWELL lessons depend heavily on the students already having the body of knowledge contained in the FOSS kit and then using that to apply to new learning experiences. In addition, the lessons align with the State Science Content Standards for California Public Schools, Science Framework for California and meet the learning objectives set out by the California Department of Education.

If a district is interested in SWELL and does not use the hands-on science kits, contact San Diego Coastkeeper to discuss changes that would need to be made in order to ensure that students get the full impact of the SWELL curriculum.

Q: DO YOU PROVIDE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT?

A: Yes. We conduct two teacher trainings for each grade level per year to help teachers teach the SWELL lessons, contact San Diego Coastkeeper to find out the training calendar.
