How Do I Get SWELL?

Project SWELL is designed for any teacher or school district in the San Diego region who wishes to include pollution prevention and hands-on inquiry-based lessons in their science curriculum. If you are a teacher in grades K-6th in the San Diego Unified School District, you should already have a Project SWELL kit in your classroom. If you don’t, please contact the Project SWELL program coordinators to help you find your kit and binder. Outside of the San Diego Unified School District, or in secondary schools, please read on about Project SWELL before contacting us.

SWELL is unique because:

  1. It is place-based.  SWELL incorporates local San Diego landmarks, habitats, animals, and geographic areas into a curriculum that specifically addresses the environmental issues we face in our region.

  2. It provides real solutions.  SWELL helps students realize their connection and influence on the local environment and discover important pollution prevention practices.

  3. It is hands-on.   SWELL activities help students experience the big ideas within the CA science standards, helping them make a first hand connection and minimize impacts to our sensitive coastal environment.

More about the Project SWELL classroom kits:

The lessons align with the Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core State Standards and meet the learning objectives set out by the California Department of Education. The hands-on SWELL kits are an important tool to teach the inquiry-based science lessons in all classrooms, and lessons are aligned with the Environmental Principles and Concepts of the Education and the Environment Initiative (EEI).

If your district is interested in SWELL and you would like to discuss the possibility of introducing it in your area, please contact our program coordinators for more information.
